The story of women in the 20th century is that of their emancipation. They liberate themselves from the tutelage of their father or husband and finally receive all civil rights, on an equal footing with men. These hundred years were for women a conquest of their freedom.

But how did they live during those decades? What fate was reserved for them in their time? Who were they? Which famous women shaped their time? They are our ancestors who lived, loved, gave birth and fought before us. They are our mothers, our grandmothers, our great-grandmothers. It’s almost a family album.
This exhibition follows the publication of the book A Photographic History of Women in the Twentieth Century by Agnès Grossmann, published by Gründ.
More than sixty contemporary prints will be on display at the Roger-Viollet Gallery from January 26 to March 25, 2023.
