What happens before an artwork becomes visible?
The international group exhibition Cogitatio Artium – Where Thought Becomes Art, opening on 24 September 2026 at Kunsthaus Weiz in Austria, explores the moment in which thought, perception, memory and emotion begin to take artistic form.
Bringing together 13 artists, the exhibition presents a wide spectrum of contemporary visual languages, from figuration and portraiture to abstraction, symbolism and imagined landscapes. Across these different approaches, Cogitatio Artium focuses on a fundamental aspect of artistic creation: the transformation of an inner experience into something visible and shareable.
The Latin title Cogitatio Artium can be understood as “contemplation of the arts” or “reflection on the arts.” In the context of the exhibition, however, it reaches beyond reflection on art itself. It points toward the inner space from which artistic creation emerges—where perception, intuition, memory, emotion and imagination begin searching for form.
The German subtitle, Wo der Gedanke zu Kunst wird – Where Thought Becomes Art, brings this process of transformation to the foreground. It describes the threshold at which something intangible acquires a visible presence through color, form, gesture and material.
Within the exhibition, human identity appears fragmented, masked, remembered and reimagined. Bodies become expressions of movement and tension, while faces create spaces of psychological encounter. Organic structures, plants, animals and hybrid beings form symbolic worlds between observation and imagination. Cosmic and atmospheric spaces expand perception beyond the immediately recognizable, while abstract works allow color, line, rhythm and texture to operate as forms of thought in their own right.
Recurring themes such as memory, transformation, solitude, resilience, nature, identity and movement connect the diverse positions presented in the exhibition. A thought may become a face; an emotion may emerge as a field of color; movement may become a line; memory may become a structure; observation may develop into an invented world.
Rather than approaching art solely as a finished object, Cogitatio Artium presents artistic creation as an act of becoming: a passage from the intangible to the tangible and from individual inner experience to shared perception.
Art begins at precisely this threshold—where thought ceases to remain invisible and becomes form.
Curators & Opening Programme
The exhibition is curated by Nour Nouri, Director of Pashmin Art Consortia; Georg Gratzer, Exhibition Curator / Art Manager of Kunsthaus Weiz; Dr. Davood Khazaie, International Curator of Pashmin Art; and Johann König, Director of Kunsthaus Weiz.
At the opening, visitors will be welcomed by Georg Gratzer, followed by opening remarks from Hermann Mauritsch, Cultural Affairs Representative. Nour Nouri and Dr. Davood Khazaie will join as guest speakers. Musical accompaniment will be provided by Lili Seitinger.
